Tan Chin Tuan Foundation National Day Celerbration

0 YARPs!
It was on a Saturday afternoon, that I for the first time get to work with Tan Chin Tuan Foundation by volunteering myself in the National Day Celebration event, at Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road).

The journey did not start off smoothly, though, as I have got to run in the heavy rain from Newton MRT to ACS, in order to catch the briefing. In the briefing site, I came to know those TCTF people with whom I would be working, especially Pan Chao, who was paired with me to take care of AWWA Elderly Service, the beneficiaries we are assigned to take charge. I was initially not confident in whether I can manage my assignment as I missed out half of the briefing, until Pan Chao gave me a firm handshake and assured me that we can make it. What happened later proved that my worry is unnecessary – thanks to Pan Chao – I was guided along the way.

I started to become busy when the elderly from AWWA arrived. I ushered the elderly to the table, trying to talk to them and lucky enough, I found myself able to understand what they said, mostly in Mandarin and English. I was also pleased to see that the old folks were happy with the instant photo taken for them while waiting for the concert to start.

Ushering the elderly to the concert hall is bigger challenge, as I got to take care so that none of the 38 elderly was left out or mixed into other groups. Thanks to P-Yong, the nurse from AWWA elderly service, who worked with me closely to ensure everyone was seated properly.

While my beneficiaries were enjoying the performance, my role switched to food server who needed to portion the buffet-style food evenly into 500 packs. Repeating the action of portioning could be tedious, but I realized what I did was meaningful when I saw all the elderly enjoyed their dinner at the table.

The fulfilling day ended with sending the elderly to their shuttle bus and their happy face tells me that, I have gained from giving.
