SB 2011 Young Arts Writers Workshop Programme by Ong Yi Xi

0 YARPs!
This year's Singapore Biennale Young Arts Writers Programme comprises of 3 sessions:

1) Approaching contemporary art 101

2) Art journalism & writing from different perspectives & for diverse audiences

3) Creative writing - using contemporary visual art as stimuli

During the following workshops, we were brought to the Singapore Art Museum to use contemporary art as stimuli. There are many intriguing art works, however I've picked out some art works that gave me inspirations.

Using simple materials to form an art piece

Materials: Strings, light bulbs, shattered glass, metal rods, automatic shaker, mirrors

Most art pieces in the museum only require us to use our eyes, however this art piece not only require us to use our eyes to appreciate it but also our ears to hear the clanging sound that is produced by the light bulbs tabbing gently on the mirrors behind them. If you tried closing your eyes while hearing the sound, you might think that it is a wind chime but if you are looking at it while covering your ears, you might think that it's only a moving art piece.

Are these normal porcelain spoons? No =)

Materials: porcelain spoons, paints

These spoons made up a story, where paintings on the spoon actually shows a simple animation. Where the character's movement and the background changes in every spoon. This also reflects our lives changes at every stage. We can be students in our current stage of our life and we can be working adults in our next stage of our life.

Mark (artist) of this art piece in the background updating his art piece

Materials: HB Pencil (From Philippines), empty wall

Mark, artist of this art piece explained that this art piece was created due to his experience in travelling to other countries where he couldn't speak their languages. He had no choice but to draw out the things that he was looking for to show the locals there so that they'll understand and guide him to the stores he wanted. This inspired him to create this art piece by shading anything the others drew the outline of an item on the wall.

Life is filled of colours

Materials: Colour pencils, brushes, pens, markers, glue stick, newspapers

This art piece may be made up of simple stationeries, however it is meaningful if you think of it more deeply. Colourful stationeries on top of LIFE newspapers, what do you think this means? Life is colourful!

Light bulb made of newspaper

Materials: Metal ruler, wooden ruler, newspapers

This piece of art is definitely inspiring! Wonder why I say that? It is because ligth bulb is always used in comics and cartoons. Whenever a character has an idea, the cartoonist will place a light bulb at the top of the character's head.

In the nut shell, everything around us is art. Art needs to be viewed in different perspectives. Always think out of the box and dare to be different. I always love art, and I won't be able to participate as well as share my experience here without the opportunity given by Tan Chin Tuan Foundation. Thus, a big thank you to Tan Chin Tuan Foundation.

Art is all around us!
